LAWMA MEDICAL WASTE MONITORING TEAM IN SOMOLU

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) Medical Waste Monitoring Team on an inspection in somolu hospitals and laboratories today Monday 16th Aug 2021.

The mandate of the team includes the of protection  and welfarism of healthcare providers, medical waste handlers and the general public, lastly to advance on  the improvement of waste management services in the healthcare sector.

The monitoring activities carried out in somolu today, revealed that somolu private hospitals don't mix their waste anymore which is not  hazardous or harmful to health waste carrier, Waste workers or even the environment at large.

It should bee highlighted at this point that the waste produced in the course of healthcare activities Involve in a higher potential for infection and injury than any other type of waste, inappropriate handling of it may have a serious impact on public health and the environment at large. 

Best management of hospital waste is a crucial aspect of environmental health protection.

Mr Habeeb Yahaya who  who head the monitoring team to somolu give proper details of of how waste should be separated as follows.

Separate the waste by type:  including sharps, pharmaceutical, chemical, pathological, and non-hazardous.

Black  bag: for general non- hazardous waste such as paper, plastics, garbage.

Yellow biohazard bag: for infectious hazardous waste such as syringes, empty IVs, wipes, swabs, gloves.

Red biohazard bag: for pathological highly infectious waste such as blood product, IV tubing, sample bottles, body parts.

 Brown biohazard bag: for expired pharmaceuticals and
Radiological bio-hazard bag: for radioactive waste g. X-ray films, Safety-box: for used needles.

Residents should observe good environmental practices and should be wary of COVID-19, the full  enforcement of operation against health facilities that do not compile on proper way to dispose their medical waste properly will be look into  as we can nit allow somolu resident to be a victim _ Say's by The Executive Chairman Hon.
